Description:
Violence against women means any act of gender-based violence that results in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life The journey of crime against women starts in the womb of the mother. Whenever a crime is committed against women and that too a violent crime, it sends shock waves to the society but those shock waves burst like bubbles in a very short time. Patriarchy is essentially based in the household in which men dominate the women economically, sexually and culturally. In short we can say that patriarchal social order is responsible for discrimination and violence against women.
In India womenfolk been subjected to different forms of violence since times immemorial considerable evidence exists of inter-generational transmission of domestic violence. Domestic violence is an extremely complex and vicious forms of abuse, committed within a particular deep rooted power, dynamic and socio-economic structure which do not allow even the recognition or acknowledgement of this abuse. The domestic violence means the violence between members of household, usually spouses, an assault or other violent act committed by one member of a household against another.
The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 has a multi-pronged approach to campaign against the menace of domestic violence. The legislature has put forth this multi option law to safeguard the rights in private space providing her violence free space. The Domestic Violence Act gives rights that are in addition to other existing laws and not in meant to address the issue of domestic violence by providing for relief to womenfolk in India facing violation in intimate relationships.
